Complex modular origami11/18/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Medical science uses folding techniques in order to insert devices into the body during surgery. For example, "scientists devise ways to fold instruments to be sent into space. Using modular origami, the student walks away with a product in his/her hands."Īccording to Szillery, the art of folding things has applications in the real world. Many have a problem learning math because it is an abstract concept. "I realized that it is extremely useful in teaching math. "I got to origami from mathematics," Szillery said. In addition to being beautiful, origami has been shown to be useful in teaching math concepts. No tape, glue or other adhesive is needed. Separate units or modules are joined together by inserting edges into pockets created during the folding process to create larger, more intricate pieces. Modular origami is a system of paper folding that repeats patterns to create a complex structure. Reservations for earlier time slots are strongly encouraged to enable time to complete more complicated pieces. Preregistration for a particular time slot is required. Participants at the workshop can choose to create one of two different three-dimensional stars, combine multiple stars to create a wreath, or build a three-dimensional 2016 desk calendar. ![]() Middle school and high school students interested in engineering careers will especially enjoy the hands-on learning opportunity. Eva Szillery of Maine Mathematics Science and Engineering Talent Search will present modular origami to students from grade three through adult.
